Toiling in L.A.'s club circuit for years, the Red Hot Chili Peppers finally pounded their Funk/rap/rock into the mainstream with the 1989 LP Mother's Milk. Making bedfellows of their native L.A. Punk roots and a love for Parliament Funkadelic, the Chili Peppers earned respect from all walks and crossed over into virtually every late-1980s subgenre: rap, Funk, rock, or Punk.
They even made covers of Stevie Wonder's "Higher Ground" and Jimi Hendrix's "Fire" all their own, with Anthony Kiedis' revved-up, attitude-fueled sing-and-rap, Flea's rapid-fire slapped bass, and John Frusciante's whirling Funk fretwork. With old guitarist Frusciante back in the fold of late, RHCP may branch out from the Twee Pop-for-tough-guys era forever, as immortalized by such offerings as "Under the Bridge" from their best album (in my opinion) blood, sugar, sex, magik.released sep 24th 1991
The Peppers hit a low patch after this but returned in 1996 with roller coaster (a track sadly synonymous with beavis and butthead!) and then subsequently the release of californication demonstrating that over nearly two decades the Peppers could still deliver, all be it a very different line up from the original.
Californication marked the return of John Frusciante, who had previously appeared on Mother's Milk and Blood Sugar Sex Magik, to replace Dave Navarro as the band's guitarist. Frusciante's return was credited with changing the band's sound altogether, producing a notable shift in style from the music recorded with Navarro. The album's subject material incorporated various sexual innuendos commonly associated with the band, but also contained more varied themes than previous outings, including lust, death, contemplations of suicide, California, drugs, globalization, and travel.
Californication is the Chili Peppers' most commercially successful studio release internationally, with over 15 million copies sold worldwide and more than 5 million in the United States alone
