SKINNY PUPPY - DISCOGRAPHY (121 VIDEOS)

Skinny Puppy

Profile:
Canadian band with members cEvin Key (keyboards, percussion) and Nivek Ogre(vocals), founded in late 1982 in Vancouver, BC. They got a contract at Nettwerk via the demo tape "Back And Forth" and released their first EP "Remission" in 1984. Their records were released in Europe by Play It Again Sam [PIAS].

They released their first LP "Bites" in 1985, now with member Wilhelm Schroeder (better known as Bill Leeb) on keyboards. In 1986, Schroeder was replaced on keyboards byDwayne R. Goettel (then in the group Psyche (2)). Over a career spanning 20+ years and as many releases, Skinny Puppy has remained fresh and vital to its many fans, and is considered as one of the most important bands in the industrial/gothic/ebm genre, inspiring such acts as Nine Inch Nails and Marilyn Manson.

Skinny Puppy disbanded for a time, following the death of Goettel by overdose in August 1995. Their final album "The Process" was completed and released in early 1996, and quickly became a bridge that earned the band many new fans. After a 5 year absence, they reformed in 2000 for a one-off concert appearance at the Doomsday festival in Dresden, Germany (which has since been released as Back And Forth, Vol. 5 in 2001). The first studio album since their reformation "The Greater Wrong Of The Right" was released after years of anticipation in 2004. They embarked on a worldwide tour in support, and a DVD has been released documenting the North American leg. 2007 saw the release of "Mythmaker", and in 2011 the band released its final album with label SPV, "hanDover". They signed with Metropolis Records in 2012, and released the live album "Bootlegged, Broke And In Solvent Seas". The band released their 12th studio album "Weapon" on May 28, 2013.Less

The Nettwerk Reissues are ridicolously awful, avoid them like the plague.
Youre better off paying alot for the originals, youre paying alot of money for a good sounding vinyl instead of a bit for a bad sounding vinyl.

SKINNY PUPPY's first show in San Francisco was at the Stone on Broadway; the opening act was SEVERED HEADS. Incredible night! Messy; bloody red corn-syrup everywhere, coming off Ogre; a girl licked my fingers.

The show was booked by Savoy Tivoli's Gerry Gerrard who managed VOICE FARM, AJAX, SRL, etc. and released MOEV's immortal "Rotting Geraniums" 12-inch. Gerry's then-wife Olga managed DIAMANDA GALAS (who was dating JELLO BIAFRA at the time)... Later in New York, at the Ritz, Olga's birthday party would feature SUICIDE (with The CARS' Ric Ocasek on guitar!) headlining over FRONTLINE ASSEMBLY, MEATBEAT MANIFESTO, AJAX. Ocasek's wife, supermodel Paulina was there, too!

The last time I saw Jerry, I was spinning vinyl at the Kennel Club (now known as the Independent?) on Divisadero; it might've been STEREOLAB's 1st show in SF; it was prior to their 1st Lollapalooza tour. Anyway... Jerry comes into the DJ booth, and so I ask him what's he doing there? He tells me he's managing NINE INCH NAILS, and Trent's in the audience! CYRNAI's eyes are wide, so I ask Jerry, can she (Cyrnai) meet Trent? He answers, "sure, let's go"...

But, rewind back a couple of years prior to all that... A local experimental band based out of 455 Tenth Street in the SOMA district (across the street from what was then an abandoned brewery, but now a huge Costco) self-described "experimental industrial" (Ex-I) aggregation called IAO CORE (described by the press as "baby Velvets" after opening for Karen Finley; the infamous "yams up my butt" performance) along with East Bay'ers GOAT GUYS FROM HELL, and ACL, were all performing together on the lawn at UC Berkeley.

Eventually resorting to simple initials, GGFH would soon sign a multiple albums deal with Peaceville UK based on recommendations from AUTOPSY/DEATH drummer Chris Reifert. Those albums by GLOBAL GENOCIDE FORGET HEAVEN would influence young UK and European extreme metal-heads that would later populate and release their own music during the peak of mid to late '90s black metal and deathgrind scene.

When MORBID ANGEL first played The Omni in Oakland (with NOCTURNUS, AUTOPSY, and VON opening? My memory is fuzzy; plus I got there late!), Trey was wearing his SKINNY PUPPY shirt onstage! Earlier that day, my roommate Brad (who worked for Combat-Relativity) drove the Morbid Angel guys around the Bay looking for LAIBACH records in all the record stores that were Brad's accounts. Lol

A founding member of IAO CORE, M.C. Schmidt would go on to form MATMOS, and work with BJORK on her albums.

Discovering a relatively "new" [electro industrial] band from Hungary: HUMAN VAULT (now based in New York, USA) and other projects directly associated with mainman MORTUM, I'm rediscovering my love for early "industrial techno-thrash" bands like SKINNY PUPPY and FRONTLINE ASSEMBLY (hails to Bill, Rhys, and old friend Mike Balch!) --and even reinvestigating the essential early pioneers like PORTION CONTROL, CABARET VOLTAIRE, BUSHIDO, STRESS, COMPOUND, SUICIDE (of course), THE NORMAL, JOHN FOXX, etc.

But I can't stress enough how shockingly amazing HUMAN VAULT is; so dark(!), so sharp-edged and dangerous, incredibly creative and imaginative, such dynamics and atmosphere, etc., ETC. I am stunned-- the true spirit of old SP and FLA will never die as long as the new blood such as HUMAN VAULT rise from the depths.

Too Dark Park is one of my all-time favorite albums, by any artist. A Masterpiece!. Definitely some changes on "The Process" but I did still very much enjoy most of it. Of the four more recent post-"Process" albums, "Handover" is my favorite, several tracks/moments hearken back to SP when they were at their best!

Huge fan. I'll admit my love for post-industrial music started w/ NIN & Ministry but I quickly found my way to these guys. The first song of theirs I ever heard was Convulsions off of Too Dark Park and it blew my mind. For the longest time I have looked for other electro-industrial acts that were just as good and I may have found a few that were close, but SP is just so unique you can't duplicate their sound. I know everyone goes through some changes and unfortunately those changes lead to disappointment (like Nine Inch Nails Post The Fragile). SP did have their fall from grace, yet they are getting back to where they once were with their album Mythmaker and the following albums after. It may be silly that a 40-something still blares SP but for me these guys have withstood the litmus of time and are still darker, deeper, more innovative than most of the bands out there. It's just unfortunate that most kids these days don't know about them or much less ever hear anything by them. Top Picks: Too Dark Park (pretty heavy stuff), Last Rights (very experimental), Bites (early work simple yet elegant), Doomsday: Back & Forth Vol.5. Top Songs: Convulsions (will scare the crap outta ya), Harsh Stone White, Optimissed (creepy dancefloor friendly tune), Left Hand Shake [Banned Studio Version] from their Intolerance bootleg album

The best SKiNNY PUPPY clone ever must be the one and only band: "X MARKS THE PEDWALK" who almost alone have succeded to make such a good copy of their music? If you haven' t heard them then you have missed something very good?

Killer music band, especially till The Process who signed a turn in SP's sound. However, they've not sold their souls neither to marketting nor fashion devils as Front Line Assembly. So if I'm not interested in their last releases anymore because it's too postproducted and less punk rocked & EBM, I respect them.
For me, "Too Dark Park" is their best album ever, followed closely by "Rabies" and "Remission". Such Artists capable of writting songs of so different kinds like punchy EBM, gothic cold wave, ballad, experimental instrumental are very rare. Watching them performing live scenic sessions is also memorable...

There are So many EBM bands that have tried to copy Skinny Puppy. Evil's Toy comes to mind.

The true pioneers of the Electro-Industrial genre and most electronic music to come. Skinny Puppy were a band I needed at a certain time in my life. While many so called artists from the 90's took their sound(just listen to the compilation Rivet head culture. No wonder they called themselves raw dog on that release whether it wasn't the full band or not, I wouldn't wanna be associated with all those posers either. Traded success and cash for making truly dark masterpieces like Last Rights or their magnum opus Too Dark Park. They rose above all the copycats, disbanded, lost Duck to a heroin O.D.(R.I.P. Dwayne) and have reformed to boot. While not as genius as they once were still far more innovative than anyone else trying to make creative electronic music.

For some reason Skinny Puppy has a distinctive touch that no one ever did manage to copy or recreate. Its true that many bands got influenced by them but to this day theres no one comparable in terms of creativity. Their weird synthesis, their arrythmias, the mysterious, decadent and vicious atmospheres they imprinted in their tracks were and still are really special and unique. I remember the many dark images that this music projected in my mind, premonitions of a world sinking into pure darkness as product from implacable forces falling down upon it. Skinny Puppy created really obscure soundtracks for the industrial age, the post modern reality or whatever term you may want to use for describing the dystopia adjacent to "the future is now" commandandment from the civilized world.

Truly revolutionary in all sense of the word, chaotic and mesmerizing SP did not just paved the way for EBM but created a singular gap in which only its own presence its allowed, a perfect conjunction of darkness that resembles a disjointed and destructive world of fantasy which its own picture is our own world.
